WAR ACRES – Payton Scott now has eight of Sand Springs’ 11 touchdowns this season, and he scored a total of four in the Sandites’ first win. Charles Page High School beat Putnam City West, 28-14, in a non-district game, Friday, Sept. 15 at Putnam City District Stadium, and Scott was in on all of the Sandite touchdowns. Scott, a senior running back, rushed for 226 yards with three touchdowns, and he caught a touchdown pass, scoring in every quarter. “I’ll take a win going into district play, and we still have to keep working to get better every week,” said head coach Dustin Kinard. Junior quarterback Caden Pennington had his best game of the season, throwing for around 150 yards and a touchdown. Scott was also his leading receiver with 99 yards on three catches. Sand Springs (1-2) had its best game offensively with 28 points and its best game defensively, giving up only 14. The Putnam City Pirates (1-2) marched down the field on their first drive, scoring on an 11-yard run from running back Anthony Johnson. However, the 7-0 lead wouldn’t last long, and Sand Springs answered with a 13-yard run from Scott at the 5:59 mark of the first quarter. Early in the second quarter, Pennington hit Scott on a short screen pass, and the senior running back did the rest. Scott weaved his way through the Patriot defense running 52 yards to the end zone, giving the Sandites a 14-7 lead. On the Pirates’ next series, senior linebacker Braden Askew recorded his first interception of the season, and, later in the game, he recovered a fumble, ending with two turnovers. They were the second and third take-a-ways for Sand Springs this season. At the 7:26 mark of the third quarter, Askew’s fumble recovery gave the Sandites the ball at midfield, but Scott fumbled it back to Putnam City. Pirate senior Tate Gooch fell on the ball in front of the Sand Springs bench, giving his team new life. After a big fourth-down stop from senior defensive lineman Kris Edwards, Scott scored his third TD on a 31-yard run with around three minutes left in the quarter. Pirate running back Larrell Smith answered on a short run from the 1-yard line, cutting the Sand Springs lead to, 21-14, with 2:44 left in the stanza. Early in the fourth, Pirate kicker Dylan Smith missed a 51-yard field goal, leading to Scott’s final score of the game on a 5-yard run. Kicker Jaden Wiser was 4-4 on extra points, and he’s 9-10 for the season. The Sandites had an opportunity to score again with around five minutes left in the game, but Scott fumbled the ball away on the Pirate 2-yard line. Gage Fain, Jerry Lyons, Tre Finch, Askew and Edwards had big games defensively, putting pressure on the Pirate backfield all game long. Both teams had trouble hanging on to the ball, but Putnam City had the most trouble. The Pirates fumbled nine times, recovering eight. Sand Springs fumbled twice and lost both. Pennington threw a touchdown and an interception, and he threw passes to Scott, Braden Millican and Dash Fleischman.
