Bishop England hosted Woodland in a Lowcountry Monday night football contest, but it took a half for the Bishops to realize they were in a game.

After stumbling their way to a 13-6 halftime deficit, the Bishops got going offensively and defensively, scoring 28 points en route to a 35-25 victory. The win evened Bishop England’s record at 2-2, while the visiting Wolverines dropped to 1-3.

“The fact that we had not played a game in 15 days, you would think we would be excited about being out here,” Bishop England coach John Cantey said. “It took us a while to get going, to wake up and play. We got it going in the second half. We played with more effort. We needed a win after two tough losses, so I’ll take it.”

Bishop England’s option attack rolled up about 200 yards on the ground in the second half. Senior quarterback Leo Albano finished with 166 yards rushing and three touchdowns, scoring on runs of 4, 10 and 25 yards. Running back Christian Greavu also had a big night, rushing for 131 yards (105 in the second half) and scoring on a 59-yard burst. He also combined with Albano on a 74-yard scoring pass – Bishop England’s lone touchdown of the opening half.

“We made some adjustments at halftime and did a better job of getting on their linebackers in the option game,” Cantey said. “When we can block it, we feel like our option game is very capable of putting up these numbers.”

Albano added 91 yards passing but only attempted two passes in the second half.

Meanwhile, Bishop England also turned up the heat defensively, forcing three turnovers, including interceptions by Steven Sumner and Charlie Michel.

“Our defense, getting some turnovers, put our offense in some good positions,” Cantey said. “I thought we tackled much better in the second half.”

Woodland quarterback Tauren Singletary passed for 226 yards, including a 64-yard touchdown connection to Quentin Haynes.

Torrez Elmore had two short touchdown scores for Woodland, while sophomore K’ron Ferrell added a 34-yard scoring run in the first half.
