For about 1:49 it was close.

Braydon Gilmore hit a pair of free throws and sparked an 18-3 run to finish out the first quarter and the Pointers never looked back to win its opening round of the Van Buren Junior High Tournament on Wednesday at the Freshman Academy.

Van Buren crashed the boards in the first quarter, out-rebounding the War Eagles 13-2 during the quarter. The Pointers finished with a 20-4 edge on the boards.

Trent Ball lead with five rebounds and Gilgore added four.

The Pointers extended the lead 31-7 to end the first half.

Heritage staged a rally of sorts in the second half and cut into Van Buren's lead 34-18 thanks to six points from Colby Scoggins, who finished the game with a high 12 points.

Van Buren and Heritage played the fourth quarter with mostly back-ups as the War Eagles were able to score 10 points off of turnovers to claw back into the contest.
