The combination of Talen Jones, Grant Olds, Toray Wilford and Micah Hendrickson accomplished that feat on their first official try -- and a little bit more.
They also set a school record, as well as a Bentonville Tiger Relays record, during Thursday's meet. The Pointers' team finished in 1 minute, 28.10 seconds to surpass the previous meet mark of 1:29.90 set by Fayetteville three years ago, and surpassed the previous school record of 1:29.46.
"We knew we had an opportunity to run well with the kids we have running on there," Van Buren Coach Hays Lemley said. "I knew we had a chance to break the school record, but I didn't know we were going to break it by more than a second.
"And anytime you break a Bentonville Tiger Relays record, you've done something because those marks are excellent."
It didn't come easy for Van Buren. When Hendrickson took the baton for the final leg, he trailed Bentonville West's Jackson Lane before he finally moved into the front with less than 30 meters to go.
Hendrickson then came back minutes later to win the 100 with a personal-best time of 10.86 seconds, while Wilford finished second at 10.98.
"He ran 21.8 in the 200 last week in really quality conditions," Lemley said of Hendrickson. "There was a little headwind, but he was still able to run like he did.
