The Van Buren Pointers have not had an easy time of it the past few years. The Pointers went 2-8 last season and are looking to bounce back from a rough couple of seasons in 2017. The Pointers have potential to be a team that can sneak up on the rest of the 7-A West. Van Buren knows that they are in a tough conference so taking it step by step is something that will have to be done as they look to improve.
The Pointers offense will depend on running back Walter Green this season, to carry quite a bit of the load. Green had a solid 2016 season, rushing for over 1,100 yards. Van Buren hopes to be able to pass the ball more effectively and still be able to let Green punch the ball in the end zone to finish off drives. Sustaining drives will be key for the Pointers as they look to increase the win total this season.
Van Buren’s defense has four starters returning and getting off the field is a high priority this season. Look for Jayden Mendez to continue to rack up the tackles at the defensive tackle position. Mendez accumulated over 60 tackles last season, and fans should expect the Pointers to continue to be strong on the defensive front. The Van Buren defense being able to force the opposing offense off the field could increase the win total for the season.
With the Pointers, it all goes back to being able to get the opposing offense off the field. If the Pointers can do that, the Pointers could increase the wins and perhaps even contend for a playoff spot. The Pointers have potential, but the 7-A West is a tough conference and earning enough victories is difficult, when it comes to wanting to play in November.
