Basketball: Van Buren Lady Pointers fall to unbeaten Conway

Van Buren battled for three quarters and even led a couple of times, but unbeaten Conway gathered some breathing room in the fourth to escape Clair Bates Arena 63-54 in a nonconference game on Tuesday night. The Lady Pointers (1-3), fresh off their run at the Paragould Invitational tournament, led 50-47 with 7:08 remaining in the fourth quarter after a bucket by Olivia Schnakenberg. Conway, led by Myia Yelder, scored on back-to-back buckets to give the Lady Wampus Cats (4-0) their final lead of the night and for the duration of the game with 6:30 left in the game. Yelder and Asiyha Smith led the contest with 17 points each while Yelder pulled down a game-high nine rebounds. Conway outrebounded Van Buren 27-12. Kayleigh Evans paced the Lady Pointers as three players reached double digits. Evans had 15 followed by 14 from Rylee Ryan and Jentry Myers added 13. Zaiyah Frazier came off the bench to score eight for Van Buren in the first half and tied with Jamilyn Kinney with four rebounds apiece. Conway had its biggest lead in the first half, 12-6, after Candrina Nolan added a putback at the 4:12 mark. Van Buren slowly chipped away at the lead and had a 10-3 run to start the second quarter to take a 24-20 lead. The lead would change hands four more times before Van Buren led 30-28 after a Ryan bucket with 2:30 remaining in the half. Myers added another two points, but Conway closed the gap to have the game tied, 33-33 at the break.
