Van Buren rolls past Patriots

The Pointers open tournament with win.

The Pointers picked up a home win on Thursday (Nov. 30) as Van Buren won its opening round of the Citizens Bank Classic by defeating the Fort Smith Patriots 67-31.

Van Buren had three players reach double digits as the starting five combined for 49 points.

Presley Kindrix led all scorers with 21 points. Both KJ Stewart and Jordan West added 10 points each. Mekhi Burnett tossed in eight for the Pointers.

The Pointers jumped to a 24-6 lead in the first quarter thanks to some hot shooting, turnovers and the Patriots coming up short.

Van Buren was 11 of 18 from the floor, scored six points off of turnovers while Fort Smith was 3 of 15.

Van Buren led on the boards 29-23 as Burnett pulled down six and Stewart added five. Burnett also had a game-high six steals as Van Buren forced 14 of Fort Smith’s 18 turnovers.

For the Patriots, Johnathan Poe and Matthew Melton had six rebounds each.

Tay Releford led Fort Smith with seven points while three other players had five each.
