Van Buren extends win streak with shutout road win

After having dropped five straight 7A-West games at one point, the Van Buren Lady Pointers are going into the state tournament with a ton of momentum. Van Buren dominated from start to finish Monday as the Lady Pointers closed out the regular season with their fourth straight win, downing Rogers Heritage on the road, 7-0. The win also gave Van Buren (15-11, 7-7) the fourth seed out of the 7A-West as the 7A State Tournament starts later this week in Cabot. Van Buren will take on Southside, the No. 5 seed from the 7A-Central, at 3 p.m. Thursday in the opening round. The winner will advance to face 7A-Central champion Bryant in Friday’s quarterfinals. In Monday’s win, the Lady Pointers raced out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on RBI groundouts from Whitney Ellis and Alexcia Trejo. Then in the fourth, Van Buren added four runs to build a 6-0 advantage, highlighted by RBI singles from Ellis, Natalie Scherrey and Katianne Bramlett. Ellis drove in her third run of the day with an RBI grounder in the sixth. Richelle Stacy then did the rest, as the pitcher finished off a two-hit shutout. She didn’t walk anyone and also struck out six. Scherrey went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Bramlett was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Caroline Davis scored two runs as well.
