Home win would put Pointers in good spot

The Van Buren Pointers have already exceeded the win total from last year, and matched the win total from each of the two previous seasons. Now, the they want to take another step forward with a win at home. “We need a win at home,” Van Buren head coach Casey Dick said. “There’s little third- and fourth-grade kids that envision being Pointers later on in life. So, win it for them. Win it for all the people coming back to watch the game. It should be an awesome atmosphere.” Van Buren (2-4, 1-2 7A-West) will have a big homecoming crowd in Friday when the Pointers host Rogers Heritage with post-season implications on the line as the weather turns to more like playoff time. “That’s football later on in the season,” Dick said. “As it gets closer to the end, the better it gets. The later in the season, the more important the games get. The last four or five games, everybody’s fighting for everything.” Van Buren won its 7A-West opener three weeks ago at Rogers, and another win would certainly put the Pointers in line for a playoff berth. Van Buren has dropped games to conference stalwarts Bentonville and Fayetteville each of the last two weeks, though, by a combined 94-14. Dick still feels his Pointers are good to go on Friday night. “These kids are resilient, they’re good,” Dick said. “We have played those two teams, and things haven’t gone our way but there are things we’ve grown in that will help us in the future on down the road.” Quarterback Christian Morrow missed last week’s game with a sprained ankle suffered near the end of the Bentonville game, and the Pointers want to be healthy heading into the biggest game of the season. “We would,” Dick said. “We have to have him healthy to put him out there. We told the kids on Sunday it is because it’s the next one. There are also some things, it’s homecoming. We have to go play football, and we’re constantly growing as a team. Friday night, that needs to resemble that. If it does, then everything will take care of itself.” Heritage (0-6, 0-3) is winless but led Springdale 14-0 in the conference opener, and led Springdale Har-Ber 9-7 in the second quarter in the next game before losing both. “You can’t look at their record,” Dick said. “They’ve played in a lot of football games and done some things really well.”
