Reeves relaxing, but missing team

The Lady Pointers earned their first 6A-West win of the season and now hit the road to Springdale Har-Ber on Friday. “I’m sure they’re excited to get ready to play in a tough place to play in Har-Ber and see if we can get a little momentum going in this race,” Van Buren head coach Chris Bryant said. The Lady Pointers clicked in all areas in the 55-33 win over Rogers Heritage on Tuesday. Through three quarters when they had the game in hand with a 46-20 lead, they were over .500 from the field with 18 buckets in 35 attempts and only went without scoring for longer than two minutes one time. “This game’s a lot easier when the ball goes in the hole,” Bryant said. “I don’t know that I haven’t been handcuffing us a little bit. You think you get to conference and you have to increase your execution and really focus on possession by possession. Obviously, this team we don’t operate our best that way.” Van Buren also held a 27-24 rebounding advantage through three quarters. A telling stretch for the Lady Bulldogs was an 8-0 run in the final three minutes of the first quarter when they ballooned a 9-7 lead to 18-7. Kayleigh Evans grabbed an offensive rebound and fed Olivia Schnakenberg for a bucket. Then Schnakenberg kicked out to Rylee Ryan for a 3-pointer from the corner. Brooklyn Kannady dished to Emmalee Greebe for a bucket inside, and Schnakenberg’s pass to Kannady led to a fast-break layup. “There’s kind of a pattern there,” Bryant said. “When we’re really engaged and playing connected, we made the extra pass, and obviously it spoke to those assists. It was good basketball. When you’re getting stops and rebounding the basketball, and then sharing the basketball good stuff’s going to happen.” The Pointers fell in overtime, 51-48. They trailed most of the game, then led late, only to see Heritage force overtime and win in the extra session.
