The Van Buren Pointers may not be ready to announce themselves as 6A-West contenders.

But scores certainly don’t lie.

The Pointers’ Isaac Delafuente scored four goals in Tuesday’s 5-1 win over Fayetteville. At 2-1, the Pointers are a game back of perennial power Springdale.

Delafuente leads the Pointers with 20 goals on the season, including 10 in the team’s first three conference games. “That is unbelievable production,” Van Buren coach Nathan Almond said.

The Pointers (6-3, 2-1) host Rogers Heritage on Friday.

“We played well,” Almond said of the team’s win over Fayetteville. ”(We) did not possess the ball as well as we needed to, but found ways to score.”

Almond praised the team’s defensive effort.

“I thought Erick Johnson had a huge game at center back last night,” he said. “He won a lot of balls in the air and really helped our possession game while our center mids were struggling. He was a big factor in holding Fayetteville to one goal.”
