Van Buren holds off Clarksville

The Pointers survived a fourth-quarter surge by Clarksville and picked up their third win of the season, 47-44 Tuesday night at Clair Bates Arena. Clarksville (4-9) trailed by as much as 14 points in the third quarter, but Emmaline Rieder began a 16-0 run. Abby Domerese, who finished with 12 points, capped the scoring spree with a four-point play after she was fouled with 5:00 remaining in the contest. The free throw tied the game up, 38-38. Emmalee Grebe took a pass from Lexi Miller to end Van Buren’s dry spell at the 3:00 mark and regained the lead. Miller, who paced the Pointers with 19 points, pushed the lead to 42-38, but another three pointer from Kenleigh Rieder cut that lead to one, 42-41. Kenleigh Rieder hit seven from beyond the arc and led the game with 21 points. Emmaline Rieder hit another trey and the Panthers led 44-40 with 1:27 remaining. It was the last time Clarksville would make a field goal for the duration of the game. The Pointers were 3-of-4 from the line and freshman Bri Ball sent inside for the final field goal of the contest. Kenleigh Rieder tied up the game, 22-22, with a three pointer at the 6:00 mark to start the second half. Kannady handed the lead back to Van Buren with her own three pointer. Her shot began an 11-0 run and the Pointers were back on top 36-22 with 46.9 seconds remaining in the third quarter. Rieder halted the scoring drought for the Panthers with her fourth three pointer of the night. The Pointers had a slow start, but Clarksville fared well enough to maintain a small lead. Sophomore Brooklyn Kannady hit a long three and Van Buren had its first lead of the contest, 10-9 with 1:32 remaining in the first quarter. Autumn Miller got the bucket for the Panthers on the opposite end, but junior Sunni Harrington sparked a 9-0 run which lasted until Kannady hit a pair of free throws with 5:36 left in the half to lead 19-11. Clarksville struggled during the run and had just one shot on goal. Kannady added eight points for Van Buren as the squad had eight players contribute to the scoring. Domerese had 12 points for Clarksville and Emmaline Rieder tossed in nine. Van Buren missed seven of its next eight shots which allowed Kenleigh Rieder to help her squad with two more three-pointers and cut into the home team’s lead, 22-19. Clarksville suffered 16 turnovers in the first half and Van Buren was able to score nine points on four of the turnovers. Boys Van Buren 59, Clarksville 36 The Pointers had all 12 players contribute to the scoring as Van Buren improved its record to 4-4 going into the Christmas break. Gary Phillips led the contest with 20 points while both Avery Salisbury and Brayden Gilmore added eight points each. Both Cole Clark and Garrett Waddill paced Clarksville with 11 points apiece.
