Southside literally came out firing on all cylinders in Friday's game at the Van Buren Classic.

The Mavericks got their first 21 points courtesy of seven 3-pointers, and they ended up making eight 3's in the first quarter and 11 for the opening half. Southside went on to roll past Providence Academy, 77-52.

"We shot the ball well (Friday) and had several kids that all contributed," Southside coach Charles Cooper said. "It was just one of those nights where it was just going in.

"The kids played well; I was kind of worried about them coming back off of a two-week layoff, so we're very happy right now."

Down 11-9 early on, the Mavs (3-0) scored 12 straight points, as four different players hit 3's. Junior Ike Moore then hit the eighth 3 for Southside in the opening quarter to extend the lead to 26-13 by the end of the first quarter. Moore hit four 3's in the first half, with his last giving the Mavs a 34-13 advantage two minutes into the second quarter.

Senior Will Smith hit Southside's 11th and final 3 of the first half, which put the Mavs up by 23, 41-18. Southside went on to lead by as many as 25 before halftime.

"We shoot a lot of 3's in practice and we've spent a lot of time behind the arc, so hopefully, that will continue," Cooper said.

The Mavericks ended up making 14 3's on the night as they shot 56 percent (14-of-25) from beyond the arc. For the game, they were 53 percent from the field (28-of-53).

"I saw a lot of good things with the young kids that are coming in and everybody contributed in some form or fashion," Cooper said. "Our play got a little sloppy at times, but sometimes you catch yourself looking at the scoreboard and not at the floor, so we're trying to stress that. But it was a good team win."

Moore led the Mavs with 16 points while senior Tavian Simpson had 12. Those two also had four 3's apiece.

Southside returns to Van Buren today to take on Fayetteville with tip-off set for 3 p.m.
