VAN BUREN -- Dakota Fenwick was focused on his senior wrestling season for four years.

"It's how I wanted it to go. It's how I knew it would go," Fenwick said. "I worked so hard the three years before that."

Fenwick capped a 35-0 season with a state title, winning the 132-pound division in dominating fashion for his third straight championship.

Fenwick is the River Valley Democrat-Gazette Boys Wrestler of the Year.

Fenwick also earned the Outstanding Wrestler award for the 106-132 pound division at the state tournament.

"It means a lot," Fenwick said. "Every day when I'm in the wrestling room, that's all I think about. I really wanted this O.W. because I'd never won it before."

Fenwick finished his career with a school-record 180 wins and is only the second wrestler in school history to win three state championships -- along with Shiloh Summers -- and is the first to earn his way into four straight finals.

"I just had to be one of the three-timers with Shiloh," Fenwick said. "I wanted to be a four-timer, but I lost my freshman year."

That loss in the finals his freshman year by a 10-8 decision provided the impetus for his run of three straight titles.

"Getting to the championship is what fueled me. But after losing, I just couldn't experience losing it again," Fenwick said. "I just worked hard every year to be that three-timer."

The next year, Fenwick's sophomore year, he met the same wrestler in the championship that he lost to previously and won 11-2 by major decision for his first title.

Another goal was to finish undefeated this season after teammate Don O'Kelley went undefeated last year.

"It really is," Fenwick said. "Don was the O.W. last year when he was undefeated. I'm happy that's how I went out."

Fenwick wrestled as much as he could, whether it was in or out of school.

"Just going to offseason tournaments," Fenwick said. "We go to them to get mat time and get better, I've been to so many tournaments other than wrestling tournaments. It made me so much better. My parents really supported me, taking me to all these tournaments."

Fenwick also was one of three state champions for the Pointers this year in leading the way to the school's fourth straight boys wrestling championship.

"It's never been done," Fenwick said. "It's awesome. I'm glad I've been a part of it. We're leaving a standard for next year. I hope it continues. I hope they make it a five-time champion."
