"Over the summer, she saw me at a camp," Cone said. "She reached out and said she was interested. Then a guard signed that she didn't think was going to sign so she was committed to that guard. After basketball season, I emailed her. The day before I emailed her, she said she had been praying for a new guard and needed somebody to reach out to her. Then I reached out the next day. It was really cool to see how the Lord was moving."
Cone signed her national letter of intent May 14 with the College of the Ozarks in Point Lookout, Mo.
"I'm very excited," Cone said. "All of my family and my friends and my coaches have helped to come to this moment. I'm so excited that it all paid off. It's a great fit for me. I've prayed about it, and the Lord is telling me that's where I need to go."
Cone was named to the 5A-West All-Conference team all three years in basketball and is second on the school's all-time assist list. In volleyball, she was also named to the 5A-West All-Conference team all three years and to the Class 5A State Tournament All-Tournament team.
Joining Cone on Spring NIL Signing Day at Van Buren was Elijah Johnson with Hastings College in Nebraska for football, Avery Molloy with Central Baptist College in Conway for soccer, Breanna Lozano with Carl Albert State College in Poteau, Okla., for wrestling, Madelyn Elliott with Arkansas Tech University for dance, Maeli Jones with the University of Tulsa for dance, and Hanna Hernandez with the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith for cheerleading.
"It's very surreal, getting ready for college and continuing to play the sport that I love," Johnson said. "It's real exciting and a blessing for sure."
Johnson played receiver, tight end and quarterback in his football career, and that versatility helped with his college recruitment.
