Van Buren senior Lexi Miller started Tuesday’s onslaught with Mount St. Mary with a flurry of early steals.

Transition basketball helped the Pointers build a quick 14-5 lead.

But it was the team’s late 3-point shooting that helped secure the Pointers’ third victory without a defeat — a 59-40 triumph that wasn’t nearly as close as it looked.

Rylee Ryan scored 17 points and freshman Brooklyn Kannady announced her presence with 16 points in the Pointers’ victory.

Miller finished with eight points and six steals.

After hitting 6-of-8 field goals to open the game, Van Buren went into a shooting tailspin that saw the Belles slice the Pointers’ lead to 24-23.

Then, as if someone flipped a switch, Van Buren countered with five straight 3-pointers. Before Mount St. Mary knew what hit them, the lead had swelled from 41-38 to 59-38.

“If we’re not making them, at least we can drive in and get to the line,” Miller said. “We just settled down and came together and worked really hard as a team.”
