Whatever Fayetteville thought it could get away with against the Van Buren girl’s team was not working. The Bulldogs played around with the Pointers in the first half taking a 12-point lead, but watched it dwindle down to just 7 by halftime. Fayetteville came out strong in the second half and converted four turnovers in the first two minutes and escaped with a 62-43 win on Tuesday night at Clair Bates Arena. Van Buren dropped to 6-9 overall and 0-2 in the league, while Fayetteville improved to 12-3 and 3-0. The Pointers travel to Rogers Heritage for another conference game on Friday before returning on Jan. 24 to host Har-Ber. The Bulldogs came away with eight turnovers in the first half, but were unable to convert any of them into points. In the second half, Fayetteville scored on four of the first five turnovers to take command. Fayetteville finished with 10 three pointers with junior Claudia Bridges with half of them as the Bulldogs finished with four players in double digits. Lyles finished with 14 and both Beck and Sasha Goforth tossed in 11 points each. Van Buren was paced by sophomore Brooklyn Kannady’s 13 points and senior Lexi Miller had 10, while Emmalee Grebe added eight. Fayetteville extended an easy run in the first quarter hitting five straight three pointers to go up 19-7. Sophomore Caroline Lyles led the charge with 10 points during the quarter, including two threes. Senior Coriah Beck added two three pointers of her own during the quarter as well. Van Buren battled back in the second quarter and kept pace with the visiting team from Northwest Arkansas. The Pointers exited the first half down by just seven, 28-21, after scoring six points in the final 1:46 while Fayetteville was scoreless in the same span.
